Ihor Okuniev – Roots (10″ Ltd to 40 copies)
With RASSVET Records, Pavel Milyakov (aka Buttechno) is shining a much appreciated light on forward-thinking underground electronic artists from Eastern Europe – and this fourth release sees the debut of Ukrainian multimedia artist Ihor Okuniev.
On ‘Roots’ – a side step from the more club-friendly sound of previous RASSVET releases by Shadowax and Pavel himself – Ihor delivers ten unique, bleakly poetic tracks, criss-crossing from lush, delicate electronics to unsettling ambience through to pure creeping dread; each one channeling a different aspect of the harsh/beautiful landscape of his homeland, and all combining to evoke an eerie, self-reflective solo odyssey through Ukrainian forests and folklore.
Imagine the desolate feedback washes of the Dead Man OST but filtered through SAWII or Mika Vainio’s Konstellatio and you’re half way there… this is an absolute killer record.
BTW – this is a super-limited, handmade lathe cut pressing; there are literally only 40 physical copies of this record in existence so be quick!
